From Chaipat's knowledge graph

KiWiS (Knowledge Workspace for Integrated Science) is the readable knowledge layer of the chaipat.cc research network. It links research notes, method ledgers, glossary entries and source provenance across astronomy, machine learning, ontology engineering and knowledge graphs. It began in 2022 as a student-facing setup wiki for courses at Chiang Mai University.

Two lives

2022–2024: a course wiki. KiWiS started as a "wiki-how" for first-year computer-science students, written while he was a teaching assistant. It held setup guides and walkthroughs for four courses: 204111 (Python), 204203 (Go), 204231 (Assembly) and 204252 (C++), plus developer-setup notes and a terminal FAQ.

2026: a research workspace. Version 2 turned it into the explanatory layer of his research. Each source has a clear role:

  • chaipat.cc remains the authoritative project registry.
  • The Research Archive keeps the original figures and research records.
  • KiWiS explains how results were produced and where each figure came from.

Method ledgers

The central format is the method ledger: a numbered, step-by-step record of a pipeline with its inputs, outputs and status. Each figure links back to its record in the archive. The first ledger, KWS–ASTRO–001, documents how resolved-star catalogues from the Hubble Space Telescope become evidence for faint structure around the galaxies M81 and M82. That work is part of his research at NARIT on faint stellar structures.

Its steps:

  1. Prepare the catalogue while keeping each field's geometry.
  2. Remove stars measured twice where neighbouring fields overlap.
  3. Aggregate spatially only after deduplication, so overlaps don't inflate density.

The legacy guides stay online under /legacy, marked as historical. Their old /docs, /appendix and /faq links redirect there, so outdated instructions aren't presented as current.

Built with

KiWiS is a Next.js 15 site in TypeScript, using Nextra 4 for MDX content, with custom components for research figures and ledger metadata. It is deployed on Vercel.
